On-Farm

Biosecurity

Biosecurity is critical to help minimize the spread of multiple diseases in the swine industry. The list of diseases is long, and they can be very devastating for producers and the industry.

Canadian Swine Biosecurity Initiative

The Canadian Pork Council will review the National Swine Biosecurity Standard, first developed in 2010 by the Canadian Swine Health Board and encourage improved biosecurity measures on-farm using the Canadian Swine Biosecurity Guideline.

Objectives of the updated Canadian Swine Biosecurity Guideline

The Canadian Swine Biosecurity Guideline will be the foundation on which benchmarking tools and biosecurity training and resources are to be developed.

Protect the Health of the Canadian Swine Herd

Improved animal health and welfare outcomes and reduced antimicrobial use

Business Continuity

Biosecurity best practices are crucial for disease prevention and trade discussion.

Continuous Improvement

Provide producers with a simple self-assessment tool.

Biosecurity Committee

A group of veterinarians, technical experts and producers are currently working on the development of the Canadian Swine Biosecurity Guideline and Benchmark Tools to help producers assess their on-farm biosecurity. The Guideline will be released in the fall of 2025.

Objectives

Update the National Swine Biosecurity Standard (2010) and develop ways to encourage producers to continuously improve biosecurity measures on-farm (i.e. benchmarking tools)

Deliverables

Updated National Swine Biosecurity Standard and voluntary benchmarking tools such as On-farm benchmarking, Feed Mill benchmarking and Truck wash audits.

new version coming in 2025

National Swine Farm-Level Biosecurity Standard

Biosecurity is the term used to describe the measures and procedures needed to protect a population against the introduction and spread of pathogens. FAO/WB/OIE experts (2009) defined it as “the implementation of measures that reduce the risk of the introduction and spread of disease agents. It requires the adoption of attitudes and behaviours by people to reduce risk in all activities involving domestic, captive/exotic and wild animals and their products”.

In January 2010, based on recommendations of the Canadian Swine Health Board Biosecurity Advisory Committee, a Technical Committee was formed and given the mandate to develop a first draft of the National Swine Farm-Level Biosecurity Standard. This voluntary Standard is a tool for producers and industry stakeholders to use to tailor biosecurity measures to individual farm needs and regional considerations. It is a means to improve the economics of the industry.
